Closed Feather Stitch is a wide line stitch used on plain-and even-weave fabrics and is a variation of feather stitch. With this stitch you can make a decorative lacy line, it is worked downwards between two parallel lines; it makes a pretty border when worked in multiple rows. To keep the rows even, guidelines may need to be marked on the fabric if the thread cannot be counted.
You can use closed feather stitch as a couching stitch to anchor groups of threads and narrow ribbon or flat cord. This stitch does not follow curves well, unless they are extremelly gradual, and it is usually worked in a straight line.
This stitch is worked in the same way as feather stitch, but the needle in inserted vertically, rather than at an angle, and loops are worked rather more closely together.
- Bring the thread through at (A) and with the thread under the needle, take a stitch from (B) to (C).
- Swing the thread over to the left and with the thread under the needle, take a stitch from (D) to (E).
- Repeat these two stitches.
